He started working at Pannónia Film Studio in 1960. He directed animation films from 1965 and his first feature-length animation film, John the Valiant (1973), was a milestone in the history of Hungarian animation. His work Sisyphus was nominated for an Oscar in 1974. His Son of the White Mare won the Best Animated Film of All Time award in Los Angeles in 1981. He taught at several Hungarian universities. He was a vice-president of the Hungarian Academy of Arts from 2014 to 2020 and as honorary president from 2020 to 2021.
