Attila CSÁJI
(1939 – 2025, Szepsi / Moldava nad Bodvou, SLO – Budapest) painter, light artist
He graduated in drawing, art history and history from the Eger Teacher Training College in 1964. He was one of the main organisers of the Hungarian avant-garde in the 1960s and 1970s. He painted lyrical abstract pictures in his first creative phase, which were followed by a series of his characteristic signature works referred to as ‘sign grids’. He became a pioneer of light art of international renown in the 1970s: he experimented with new methods in laser technology and holography, revolutionising the visual potential of these techniques. Excelling in this field, he became a lectur er at the MIT (USA) and a member of its C entre for Advanced Visual Studies. he founded the International Kepes Society and organised international light symposia in the 1990s. He was the Vice President of the Hungarian Academy of Arts between 2011 and 2024.
